Manual and Semi-Automatic Printers

HMI manufactures and supports a Semi-Automatic line of printers that are affordable and user friendly. They feature simple set-up, precision deposition and multiple option choices to meet your specific application.

HMI also manufactures a manual printer for entry level manufacturers and educational institutions. These printers, while inexpensive, offer many of the same control, frame mounting and tooling choices available on the larger, production-capable machines.

MSP-485 Screen Size 12″ x 12″ ID & Smaller

The HMI Model MSP-485 is a stand-alone Semi-Automatic precision screen printer. Designed for entry level production requirements, it is also well suited to a research and development laboratory or testing facility where process quality and performance can be achieved offline.

Printer functions are processed by a programmable logic controller (PLC). A number of print modes are possible. Squeegee speed, stroke lift and end points, as well as the print head controls, are set manually. Precision adjustments and locks allow for reproducible and repeatable setups.

The MSP-485 is a manual load and unload machine. The substrate is held in place by vacuum. The toolplate can be either HMI’s standard adjustable toolplate or a toolplate custom designed by HMI’s Engineering Department to accommodate a specific substrate.

Print alignment to the screen image is accomplished using a precision incremental stage. The stage can be manually adjusted in the “X” axis, the “Y” axis and in the “T” axis. The “T” axis, or Theta axis, is a true rotation about the center point of the stage. This allows for adjustments in the alignment rotation without compromising adjustments in the X and Y alignment.

Cycle start can be either by foot switch or dual pushbutton. The MSP-485 print stroke is driven by HMI’s unique aqueous drive system, producing a printed image free of defects related to squeegee shatter. The MSP-485 can be fitted with optional squeegee speed and cycle counter features. It can also accommodate a manual vision alignment system.

MSP-885 Screen Size 12″ x 12″ ID & smaller

The Model MSP-885 Semi-Automatic precision screen printer is a time-tested testament to the standards of electronic production engineering. Developed and refined, modernized and enhanced over its 30 year history, the MSP-885 is the work horse of the global thick film industry.

The MSP-885 is available as a stand-alone printer. It can be modified in the factory, or in the field, to become part of an automated assembly system. Even the print head assembly, alone, is available for integration into a rotary or in-line production application.

Intended for high-volume production applications, the MSP-885 has a fixed tooling stage. Several methods of mechanical alignment of the substrate to the tooling can be custom designed to accommodate a specific substrate. The print alignment is controlled by moving the screen in X, Y and T. The MSP-885 can deliver precisely registered, uniform results, print after print.

The MSP-885 is operated using a programmable logic controller (PLC). Several different print modes and delay sequences can be selected. Print control, squeegee drive and motion settings are controlled manually using precision adjustments that can be locked into place. Reliable and repeatable printer setups can be achieved using the indicators provided.

The MSP-885 is available with an optional squeegee speed indicator and cycle counter monitor. The printer can also be fitted with a manual vision alignment system. Several types on load and unload HMI automation equipment (link to automation equipment) can be integrated with the MSP-885 to enhance production throughput.

MSP-885PC Screen Size 12″ x 12″ ID & smaller

The Model MSP-885PC has all the same features as the standard MSP-885, but is controlled instead by a PC (Personal Computer). The introduction of a more complex computing system introduces the possibility of a more complex interaction with the printer and with the system surrounding the printer. Saving and recalling setup recipes, handshaking signals passed to handling equipment and production statistics are available using the PC controller.

Another advantage of the MSP-885PC is the introduction of a Graphic User Interface (GUI). A monitor and a keyboard are available to the operator for interaction with the printer. The GUI is also the first step to introducing an automated vision alignment system. While the GUI is a significant enhancement for the MSP-885PC, it also greatly reduces the cost and modification required down the road, should a vision system be required.

The MSP-885PC has a servo-driven squeegee and a servo-driven “Z” axis adjustment, which are both standard items. This allows squeegee speed, squeegee lift and end points, and screen snap off to be computer programed and adjusted through the GUI.

The printer can also be fitted with various optional squeegee print heads. The PC capability can interface with a number of the automated or feedback print heads available from HMI. Automating the print head allows the operator to program squeegee pressure, down stop and flood settings.

The MSP-885PC is the next step up from the MSP-885, introducing programmability and automation. It provides the necessary platform to introduce automated print heads, and allows for an easy upgrade to fully automated vision alignment. (click for brochure)

MSP-9155 Screen Size 20″ x 20″ ID & smaller

The Model MSP-9155 is the next step up in the precision screen printer industry. Its ability to accommodate the larger 20×20 screen frame without sacrificing registration or print quality make it an integral part of the large area, small tolerance production and developmental electronic assembly industry.

The MSP-9155 has a manually adjustable stage for holding, locating and aligning the substrate for print. The stage offers precise incremental changes in “X”, “Y” and “T”. The MSP-2405 has several large print area specific options such as “Progressive Peel” a mechanically enhanced method of insuring that the screen is peeling, or lifting, away from the substrate during a print requiring a snap-off distance, thus preventing print defects as a result of screen drag.

MSP-088 Screen Size 12″ x 12″ ID & smaller

The HMI Model MSP-088 is a bench top manually operated precision screen printer. Designed for research and development opportunities at educational institutions, the printer is also well suited for a production facility where process quality and performance need to be investigated off line.

Offering many of the same process frame mounting, print alignment and substrate tooling components used in production equipment, the MSP-088 is an excellent learning tool. Setting snap-off, adjusting the screen in the X, Y and T axis, vacuum hold down and substrate registration are all screen printing parameters that can be scaled up to production equipment.

As an added bonus, the toolplate and screen frame used on the MSP-088 are identical to those required on the HMI Model MSP-485, a semi-automatic precision screen printer. Develop your process on the MSP-088 in the lab and transfer the tooling, screen and setup parameters directly to a production environment.

The squeegee on the MSP-088 is manually drawn across the screen. While this may introduce a learning curve requirement for proper performance, it also allows the operator to rapidly adjust, and therefore learn the consequences of, squeegee speed, squeegee pressure, angle of attack and edge effect. It is literally, a hands-on experience.

The MSP-088 is an inexpensive, but capable printer that can be a learning experience, a laboratory R & D tool, or a small scale process enhancement development machine. It has scale up potential and combines production line results with an entry level price tag. (click for brochure)

Refurbished Printers

HMI offers its customers the option of refurbishing select models of existing HMI and AMI-Presco screen printer, vision and handling products. We recommend a factory restoration. The equipment to be refurbished is returned to HMI, evaluated and a quote to refurbish is generated. The degree to which the machine is to be updated is discussed with the customer prior to the equipment being returned to HMI. Once the quote is approved, the machine is disassembled and restored.

Levels of restoration include:

  • Performance Restoration. This restoration includes wear items that may affect performance. Examples of items replaced would include bearings, bearing surfaces, belts, filters, valves, tooling and operator wear items such as switches and knobs.
  • Electronic Controls Restoration. During this process the electronic control components are modernized or upgraded to our most recent designs, including associated software. Sensors, switches and valves can be part of this type of restoration. Older relay based machines benefit greatly from this type of restoration.
  • Complete Restoration. The procedure for a complete restoration includes a total disassembly of the equipment. In addition to a performance and an electronic control restoration, the machine gets new paint, detailing, covers and plating.

The amount of restoration can be customized according to budget and the utility required from the restoration in terms of process function. The levels listed above are simple guidelines.

HMI also has an independent refurbishment program that is constantly working to renew and restore older model AMI-Presco screen printers. These printers, as available, are offered to customers to compliment, replace or exchange with, existing printers in the field.

Refurbishing your existing HMI and AMI-Presco equipment can be a very effective and economic way of bringing older equipment back on on-line or back up to initial performance parameters.

 

Automatic Printers

HMI offers its standard printer line with two forms of automation. One method of automation is a PC version of the standard printer model. The PLC controller in the standard printer is replaced by a computer. The computer allows certain machine specific automation options, but primarily allows the printer to remember setup recipes and to interface with other computer controlled system equipment.

The other method of automation includes motorized computer controlled components, integrated with a vision system to provide fully automated printer performance. In addition to the benefits of saving setup recipes and interfacing with other system automation, the printer registration is enhanced by the accuracy of the vision system.

The degree to which the printer operation and function are affected by the addition of computer controls varies from model to model, but the effect is always to enhance the value of the printer.

MSP-886 Screen Size 12″ x 12″ ID & smaller

The Model MSP-886 takes the MSP-885PC to the next level; full automation. All the precision elements of the MSP-885 and MSP-885PC are now combined with a fully automated vision system.

The manually adjusted screen frame alignment mechanism is replaced by a servo driven substrate tooling stage. Combined with an optional programmable print head, the entire printer can be controlled through the Graphic User Interface (GUI).

The MSP-886 can be a fully automated standalone printer or it can be fully integrated into an automated assembly process. Setup information for the printer can be saved and recalled from the PC memory. Screen to substrate alignment can be automated through the vision system. An optional programmable print head allows the head to communicate its setup information with the rest of the printer. MSP-9156 Screen Size 20″ x 20″ ID & smaller

The Model MSP-9156 takes the MSP-9155PC to the next level; full automation. All the precision elements of the MSP-9155 and MSP-9155PC are now combined with a fully automated vision system.

The manually adjusted tooling stage is replaced by a servo driven tooling stage. The servo adjusted axis mechanisms allow the vision system to move the stage as required to precisely align the screen to the substrate. Combined with an optional programmable print head, the entire printer can be controlled through the Graphic User Interface (GUI).

The MSP-9156 can be a fully automated stand-alone printer or it can be fully integrated into an automated assembly process.
